This is not the Dakar Rally |
Eso no es el Rally Dakar | |
Synopsis: Each January two car rallies hit the road for a crossing from Europe to the West African coast. One is huge, expensive, spectacular machinery of the Rally Dakar. The other is the Plymouth-Banjul Challenge, an adventure that embodies values completely opposite to those of its counterpart. The Challenge is simply to drive the route from Plymouth (UK) to Banjul (the capital of Gambia) on cars whose nominal value cannot exceed 300 €. In other words, to drive old teapots for over 6.000 kilometres with practically no money and no mechanical assistance, all in good mood. There are neither prizes nor winners, and once in Banjul the cars are auctioned to raise funds for local charities. Nearly 200 teams took part in the 2006 Challenge, most of which made it to the end. The film follows the ups and downs of several of these adventurers as they take in the beauty of the desert while learning that the most basic survival kit includes a hammer, a pair of pliers, some wire and an unlimited amount of English breakfast tea. |
